I became fascinated with the idea of capturing this fruit in perfumery, and after considerable effort I commissioned what I believe to be the world's first essential oil distilled from the shatkora. The result exceeded my hopes. The oil carries that unmistakable character, bright and unusual, with an almost savoury quality beneath the citrus that hints at the curries and bhuna dishes where it finds its most celebrated expression.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the oud itself, I turned to oil distilled from trees of approximately eighty years of age — the same exceptional material that found its way into that synthetic monstrosity, Creed's Zarian. I have used it generously because I wanted there to be no question about what you are smelling. I have grown weary of compositions that claim to feature oud only to bury it beneath a cacophony of synthetic fruits that bear no relation whatsoever to the land from which the wood was harvested. Sylhet is not a place of artificial sweetness. The imperial workshops employed master distillers who dedicated their lives to capturing the essence of India's botanical treasures — deer musk from the high Himalayas, jasmine harvested before dawn, sandalwood from the forests of Mysore, and precious oud resins traded along ancient routes. These were the materials of empire, and no cost was too great in their pursuit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI created Mughal to pay homage to this extraordinary heritage. But what emerged from the composition surprised even me. At its heart lies an ingredient of exceptional rarity: vintage Syrian jasmine, produced by an artisan in Syria prior to 2009 and brought to Türkiye at the start of the Civil War. This jasmine behaves like nothing else I have encountered, and it demanded a structure that defies conventional perfumery logic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Experience \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMughal opens with a thick, velvety, deep musky oud scent that hangs rich in the air. The only comparison I can offer is the experience of stepping onto the finest handwoven silk rug — but instead of your feet experiencing that soft and comforting embrace, with Mughal it is your nose that receives the olfactory equivalent. This is the thickest and richest chocolatey, sweet, honeyed opening of any scent or perfume I have ever encountered. The oud and musk combine to create an effect of pure, unapologetic opulence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the dry down continues, the heart of the perfume begins to reveal the treasure that lies hidden within: that ultra-rare vintage Syrian jasmine. Now go further and imagine that the different constituents in such an attar become subsumed into one another, usually a hallmark of vintage attars, typically 20+ years or older.  Well, you don't have to imagine all this if you are lucky enough to own the Special Reserve No. 2 crafted by Al Hashimi's duo of insane aromatic fanatics.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-xf-p=\"1\"\u003eThe question is, can this be bettered?  How does one improve on perfection?  The answer is that you really cannot. Still, we've decided to use a large amount of the Special Reserve No.2 stock for a derivative batch that we expertly blended with the finest Jasmine Absolute and other world-class signature florals (come on, we can't give\u003cem\u003e all\u003c\/em\u003e our secrets away!)  We called it Special Reserve No.6 and then added aged ambergris tincture made from a vintage piece of the highest-grade ambergris. The result was magnificent, but it also made Abbasi incredibly limited, and once those musks were gone, they were gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAl Ghaliyah is my answer to that challenge. It preserves the unmistakable structure and Abbasid soul of Abbasi, but with a deliberate and thoughtful recalibration. Instead of leaning heavily on the rarest and most finite materials, it places greater emphasis on the Kashmiri and Himalayan musk in Mysore sandalwood accord — a foundation originally crafted for us in Dubai and refined over time. This accord now forms the majority of the blend, bringing a smoother and more approachable elegance, while allowing the fragrance to exist beyond a handful of bottles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eTo turn this into a sprayable extrait, I blended \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e4 grams of the original Al Ghaliyah attar\u003c\/span\u003e into a finely balanced composition — not a dilution, but a transformation tuned for projection, atmosphere and wearability. The opulent rose, strands of saffron, Mysore sandalwood, ambergris and oud remain exactly where they should be — anchored by that expanded musk–sandalwood body, velvety and rich, binding everything together in harmony.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIt was important to me that Al Ghaliyah did not become a compromise. I wanted it to feel just as precious, just as expressive, and just as rooted in the classical spirit that inspired Abbasi — only with more room to breathe. More room to be worn, lived in, enjoyed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThere is also an element of irony here: because of the materials inside, \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003ethe bottle is, by definition, underpriced\u003c\/span\u003e. To put this into perspective — \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e2.5 grams of the Al Ghaliyah attar alone costs 650 USD\u003c\/span\u003e. For this extrait, each bottle contains \u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e4 grams\u003c\/span\u003e of that very same attar, before we account for the Mysore sandalwood, rose, oud, ambergris and the rest. But I wanted this to be accessible, not a museum piece. A scent that could actually be worn by the collectors who understand it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAl Ghaliyah was made to celebrate heritage without putting it out of reach.
